Monday, October 9th

Good morning! Here are our plans for today in class:

  • We'll watch the final scene of Cast Away. Then we'll review the concepts of theme and symbolism and work together to generate a list of symbols from the film. Finally, you'll craft a one page response in your Writer's Notebook to the following prompt:
    • What is the theme of this film? Choose 1-2 main symbols and explain how they help develop the theme.
  • You'll have WORK TIME to complete Grammar, Vocabulary, and Reading Quiz corrections.

  • Public Service Announcement: Wednesday of next week (10/11) is last day I'll accept any corrections or missing work for this quarter. 
  • We'll begin with a Writer's Workshop on your Final Papers. 
  • Then we'll continue viewing and discussing Cast Away, focusing on symbolism and thematic connections to our study of the code hero.

    • You need to finish and print your first draft of your final paper in class TODAY. We'll workshop the papers in class tomorrow. 
    • If everyone gets their papers printed with time to spare, we'll continue viewing and discussing Cast Away.

    • GUMS II (It was due yesterday, but a number of you still need to turn it in.)

    • You'll select your topic. 
    • You'll craft and submit your thesis. (Due Today)
    • Work on GUMS Part II. (Due Tomorrow)
    • One-on-one grade checks.

Happy last Monday of September! Here's what we'll do in class today:

  • Notes: You'll take notes as we discuss Thesis Statements, focusing on formulating arguable claims versus simple statements of fact. 
  • You'll write a thesis statement about either Shane or The Old Man and the Sea and share it in class. We'll all discuss each claim and classify each as an arguable claim or a statement of fact.
  • We'll read and discuss Chapter 8 of Shane. (Rdg. Quiz: Ch. 8-11 Tomorrow)
  • You'll have WORK TIME for the following: 
    • Rdg. Quiz: Ch. 4-7.
    • Read Chapter 9 on your own. 
    • GUMS Part II due Wednesday.
